2008 Au Naturel: The Nude in the 21st Century
CCC's Second Juried International Art Exhibition
The opening for Clatsop Community College's (CCC) second annual juried international art exhibit, Au Naturel: The Nude in the
21st Century was held at the CCC Art Center Gallery on Tuesday evening, March 18th at 6:00 p.m. More than 65 pieces of artwork
are on display by artists from all over the world, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, as well as from 24
different states here in the US.
The reception this year attracted at least 200 guests, possibly even more than last year, and over a dozen of the participating
artists were present. Kristin Shauck and Teri Sund announced the award winners during the reception. First Place was awarded to
Samantha Wall of Portland, OR. Her piece, Pinning, is an enormous mural-sized drawing in conté crayon and gouache. She explains
that her current body of work "investigates psychological and physical conflict. The fascination to experience conflict firsthand
or by proxy seems inherently human. I am particularly interested in representing women as aggressors. Through scale and context,
my drawings aim to challenge perceptions of the female nude."
Robert Creighton of Ontario, Canada was awarded Second Place for his mixed-media drawing entitled Details on the Road of Excess.
Artwork selected as Purchase Awards for the college's Permanent Collection include the abstract painting, entitled Termagant, by
Darren Orange of Astoria, OR, and the striking monoprint, entitled Man & Nature I, by Harold Lohner of Albany, NY. These, as well
as the five dozen other works of art, will be on display at CCC's Art Center Gallery March 18th - May 15th, 2008.
While the show represents a broad range of international artwork from the furthest reaches of the globe, such as Turkey and Iran,
it also reflects the vibrancy of the local arts community with a strong representation of Astoria artists. Jamie Boyd of Astoria
states, "It was a great opportunity to be accepted into the show. The nude is a subject matter that I've studied for years since
the human form is such a classic subject for artists. This show has a great diversity of work and has drawn quite a bit of
talent."
The juror for this year's exhibition is Margaret Bullock, Curator of Collections and Special Exhibitions to the Tacoma Art Museum.
In explaining her selections, she states, "All the works in this show underline our continuing fascination with our own physical
form and its place in our emotional, intellectual, imaginative and creative universes. They explore and celebrate the volumes,
lines and gestures of the human body as well as bear witness to its seemingly endless artistic potential." Although she was not
able to attend the artists' reception Tuesday evening, she will be visiting Astoria, OR to give a lecture in conjunction with
the exhibition. The lecture will be held in CCC's Art Center Gallery on Friday, April 4th at 10:00 am. This event is free and
open to the public.
In addition to this year's gallery exhibit, visitors have the opportunity to view the artwork purchased from last year's show,
which are now part of the college's Permanent Collection. These pieces are currently on display at the Badollet Library in the
Desdemona Room, which is located on the East end of the library's main floor.
